Len Smit is a 1969 graduate of Calvin College and a 1973 graduate of Wayne State University School of Law. Following his admission to the State Bar of Michigan in 1973, Len focused his practice in the areas of worker’s compensation and Social Security Disability claims. After starting his career with a large statewide firm, Len and his partner, Tim Kragt, eventually branched out and established Smit & Kragt, as the pre-eminent worker’s compensation and Social Security Disability law firm serving Southwest Michigan. In 2009, after 35 successful years of legal practice, Len and his partner merged their law firm with Conybeare Law Office, where Len served “of counsel” until his retirement.
Len’s professional affiliations over the years included the Berrien County Bar Association; State Bar of Michigan; Michigan Association for Justice; and the American Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in both Michigan’s state and federal courts.
Len was a seminar presenter for the Institute of Continuing Education in the areas of worker’s compensation and Social Security Disability. Len has served on the board of directors of the Michigan Migrant Legal Assistance Project and is a life member of the NAACP.
Over the years, Len and his wife, Beth, have been active in the Lakeshore community and the Lakeshore Public Schools. They have three children, Bradley, Laurel and Peter, and enjoy their home on Lake Michigan in Stevensville. Len enjoys golf, water skiing and travel.
